Yoko-Shiho-Gatame is one of the hardest hold-downs to break in judo. There are a few theoretical ways to get out of yoko-shiho-gatame but really only one that is very practical. In this tutorial, I’ll show you three variations:

a) Squirming out (very simplistic and probably only works on beginners)
b) Sankaku (most practical way to escape)
c) Belt grip reversal (something to do when uke has a mune-gatame)
